JACKSON, Tenn. – On Mar. 1-2, the Union University softball team played a three-game series with GSC opponent Mississippi College. The Choctaws won all three games by scores of 5-2, 8-0, and 10-2, respectively. With the losses, Union drops to 2-15 overall (2-6 GSC), while Mississippi College improves to 15-8 overall (5-4 GSC).
Game one was a close contest. The Choctaws scored three runs in the top of the second, and the Lady Bulldogs responded with two runs of their own in the home half of the third, courtesy of a Brooke Puckett double and a Courtney Marler single. However, that was as close as Union would come in the ultimate 5-2 loss.
Both Brooke Puckett and Courtney Marler went 2-3 in the game with Morgan Jennings recording the only other Union hit. Rylee Moore took the loss after pitching five innings and allowing five runs on 10 hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Kira Finkley threw the final two innings in relief, striking out two Choctaws.
Games two and three each ended in five innings due to run-rule. Hailey Sipes and Marler recorded one hit apiece in the two games with Sipes’ hit in game three being a two-RBI single in the third inning. Jennings was 2-2 with a run scored in game three.
Riley Vaughn and Emily Claire Felder combined to pitch all five innings of game two with each collecting four strikeouts and Vaughn taking the loss. Union used three pitchers in game three, including Finkley, Vaughn, and Moore. Finkley was the starter and took the loss. Vaughn followed, pitching 1.1 innings. Moore came in next and threw the final 3.2 innings, allowing two runs (only one earned) on four hits and three walks. She also struck out four hitters.
Up next, the Lady Bulldogs will travel to Pleasant Grove, Ala., to face Miles College in a midweek doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for Mar. 5 at 2:00 p.m. with game two to follow.
